William Paterson invites application for the full-time 12-month position of Academic Success Specialist in the Division of Enrollment Management.

 

Department overview

 

The Academic Success Center works collaboratively with members of the University to tailor and cater to the needs of the student population. Students receive both one-on-one and group-oriented tutoring assistance for a wide range of lower-level and upper-level courses, as well as for developmental skills for mathematics and reading courses.

 

Students can make the Academic Success Center a home to hone their skills. Academic workshops are facilitated to help students develop effective study skills for lifelong learning. From the Center's lab, students may access network computer facilities. Study groups, and exam review sessions are also available upon request.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

 

The Academic Success Specialist assists the Director in designing and implementing retention strategies that reflect the mission, vision and goals of the Academic Success Center and its commitment to help students become more efficient and effective learners.

 

Faculty Engagement and Community Partnerships:

 

 

  • The Academic Success Specialist will collaborate with faculty, departments, and campus support offices to implement programs that promote student success, academic excellence, and retention to graduation.
  • Conduct class presentations, workshops, and promote ASC services at open houses, orientation, and other campus events.
  • Serve on campus committees that involve and support ASC academic success initiatives.

 

Black and Latino Male Initiative:

 

The Academic Success Specialist coordinates the Black and Latino Male Initiative to increase retention, persistence, academic success, and graduation rates for Black and Latino male students at the University. Develops and implements program activities, including but not limited to:

 

  • Peer and Professional mentoring programs
  • Individual and group check-in meetings
  • Book club and discussion group
  • Themed summits and conferences
  • Monitors student engagement and academic progress
  • Conduct program assessment and outcomes data collection
  • Prepares interim and annual program reports
  • Chairs the BLMI core advisory committee

 

Student Engagement:

 

  • Works with student clubs and organizations to conduct programming that helps students develop academic success strategies and promotes utilization of academic support services.
  • Coordinates initiatives that support the academic success of special and at-risk populations.
  • Coordinates the recruitment and training of ASC student ambassadors.

 

Academic Intervention and Retention:

 

  • Conducts workshops on Success strategies for students on academic warning/jeopardy.
  • Referral and development of Individual Academic Plans for students with below 2.5 GPA.

 

Data Collection and Tracking:

 

  • Conducts regular program assessment and outcomes data collection.
  • Provides interim and final reports of goals and student success outcomes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Hybrid/Remote work schedule available depending upon institutional need.

 

 

 

 

Required qualifications

 

  • Master’s Degree
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Advanced technology skills using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings and/or weekends.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in an online environment.

 

 

Additional, preferred qualifications

 

  • Master’s Degree
  • Experience in academic administration related to student academic support programs and learning centers.
  • Knowledge of Banner Enterprise System.

 

Personal attributes and traits

 

  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written format.
  • Ability to identify the key components of a problem, determine possible solutions, and set in motion actions to obtain a desired result.
  • Desire and skills to counsel, support, and mentor students.
  • Capable of prioritizing work, setting expectations, and meeting agreed upon goals and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and be supportive in a complex and diverse environment to identify, coordinate, and maximize the use of available resources.
