William Paterson University invites applications for the full-time position of Advisement Specialist.

 

Reporting to the Chairperson of the Department of Nursing, the Advisement Specialist advises nursing students who are enrolled the various nursing programs, both undergraduate and graduate. In collaboration with the program coordinators, the Advisement Specialist works to develop and implement an effective system of academic recruitment, advisement, matriculation, and retention.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Providing academic advising support of nursing students from recruitment to graduation.
  • Implementing an effective system of academic recruitment, advisement, matriculation, and retention of students in coordination with the Offices of Admissions, Registrar, Financial Aid and the Nursing Department Chair and faculty.  
  • Establishing and maintaining degree maps based on the rotation of courses for each program and providing this information to students.
  • Advising incoming and current nursing students on course selection and registration with the appropriate degree plans including registration overrides and transfer of credits as needed.
  • Advising on-campus/on ground graduate students who request transfer to the WP online MSN Program or vice versa.
  • Advising MSN students when planning to change concentration.
  • Advising RN-MSN students on requirements for successful matriculation into the MSN program.
  • Reviewing academic standing for all students and working with the Nursing Department’s Academic Standards Committee regarding academic probation and/or dismissals.  
  • Ensuring consistent communication to students on policies and procedures, and changes in degree requirements.
  • Ensuring assessment of advising, recruitment and retention processes and implementing change based on assessments.
  • Utilizing, and willing to learn, various technology systems to complete tasks and communicate across audiences.
  • Performing other duties as assigned that are appropriate for the position.

 

 

Qualifications – the ideal candidate must have the following:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) or more years’ work experience in academic advisement, student affairs, student services, counseling, mentoring or related area.
  • Demonstrated skills in Information Technology and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Suite Office Applications.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evening and weekend assignments.
  • Capable of working effectively using online platforms such as Zoom and Teams.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a hybrid, remote work environment depending upon institutional need.

Master’s degree
